A Silver Necklace...

The morning of my Grandfather's memorial service, my Dad asked the ladies in the family to go through Grandma's jewelry and for each of us chose a piece.  It was really a special thing to have and each of us chose to wear what we had received to the memorial service.  I have a beautiful necklace that I chose that had belonged to my Great Grandmother May and been passed on to Grandma Stella after her Mother (May Clark) passed away, and a tatted lavendar necklace for my little Rosie Posie that will be hers someday when she is a bit older.  My older daughter made her own choice and also received a lovely treasure.

There were many many treasures, and among them several tatted pieces...

This is a lovely piece that I snapped a couple of photos of to share with all of you as I thought you would enjoy seeing it...

I do wish that I had thought to flip it over and snap a photo of the back so that we could see how that doodad was added...but here is a close up of the motif for you at least...

Grandma created quite a number of tatted jewelry pieces...primarily necklaces. I thought this one particularly lovely. My photos really do not do the piece justice, but at least you get to see it! The silver thread is very pretty, with a lot of pretty gold sparkle to it, and the motif is just lovely.

    1. Thank you Michelle!!! Grandma was really talented and an artist in her own right I think, though others may have considered her simply a homemaker.

I love that little dress, thank you!!! :-) It is such fun to see my little miss wear it too!

My big girl started school on Monday too, my Dad starts back this week, Mom next at her school......busyness for sure. We were eeking in this vacation right at the last possible time this summer :-)

    1. Thank you! I agree, Grandma was quite talented...I would have loved to see what she would create now, with access to what we all enjoy today via the many books, internet, and new techniques!!!

  3. I was stunned to see this beautiful beaded necklace!
Do you have any idea what year she created this amazing piece! I thought tatted jewelry, especially necklaces - with beads - is something fairly new, not to mention the gorgeous pendant with the large bead! And gold thread? She apparently was way ahead of her time! What a treasure!

I also think the sweet dress is so adorable, as is your daughter, of course! And the afghan is excellent, too! I'm reminded of the book titled 'No Idle Hands' , written by Anne MacDonald, about the history of knitting. That title definitely describes you!

    1. I think this necklace most likely dates from somewhere in the late 80s to early 90s, based on what I remember her showing me when I was in highschool. She used beads in a number of necklaces. I have several more to post...she was ahead of her time I think, really an artist in her own right. I remember her sketching things from what she would see in a museum or something that sparked an idea and then sitting down and creating/recreating a piece from that sketch.

  4. If I had read the title of this post I would have seen that it is silver thread. I spent all kinds of time in the early '90s hunting for metallic thread that would work with tatting, and I finally found DMC metallic thread on a spool, in both silver and gold, and I am glad they still make it. I wonder if that's what she used.

I'm just amazed at her artistic talent, and how ahead of her time she was! I'm so pleased you are sharing her work with us, as it should be seen!

    1. The thread is silver with a gold filament...so one could say it is both silver and gold. As far as I know, she only kept a box of samples of things she had tatted and sketches of ideas she had yet to implement...no other notes except to correct some patterns in what books and magazines she had for tatting patterns. I am glad you are enjoying seeing her work...I too feel it should be seen :-)

  5. I love that the concept of inhering or passing down jewelry still exists. My boyfriend gave me his grandmother’s diamond ring as a symbol of our engagement. I just love it from any angle! Not only because it’s diamond, but the fact that it once belonged to his late grandmother, and now, it belongs to me. By the way, that necklace is gorgeous. I’d love to see you wearing it.
