Antique Edgings and a Doily...

A little bit of antiquing a while back found these...fairly basic edgings, for the most part, but I always get excited when I see some tatting.  The pink variegated edging is my favorite of the lot I think...

...and then I found this...

I thought this really a quite nice example of vintage tatting...really lovely!

In this next photo, a better "up close" look at the pattern...
It's all rings, nary a chain anywhere.
Most intriguing really,
and very, very lovely...

Here is the reverse, so that you can see how the linen centre is finished...simply folded over and crocheted round...but it seems to have held quite well...

All in all, a fun day...the doily was the only piece I brought home in the end.  I am just intrigued by some of the design elements in it and wanted to have it for future reference...and to share with all of you!

  1. oh what fun to find tatting anywhere that you didn't do yourself.

  2. It's interesting that this doily pattern seems to use similar combinations to the one I also found at an antique store which has rings only, then does that X pattern to give some interest, then more rings. On my doily, the final round is a clover and chain pattern, which is quite effective, and may have been added by the tatter. In any event, the math had to work out! I'm still amazed at how perfectly it was tatted and attached to the linen piece. You can copy this url to see the doily. Actually I've used the doily several times in my posts as a background! Scroll down til you see the pink egg. (Posted April 1. 2009)
